Message from YNPN-NYC Advisory Board - Programs and Events for the remainder of 2006
YNPN-NYC's membership has now reached over 1,800, and our online community is more active than ever! The all-volunteer Advisory Board has been
working hard over the past few months to implement some exciting new programs and events for the remainder of 2006.
Some upcoming events will be:
Tentative Date: Wed. Aug. 16, 2006
Introducing YNPN-NYC's Own Career Counselor
This will be the kick-off event in a series of nonprofit career counseling events.
6:30-8:30 PM, Venue TBA
Wed. Sept. 20, 2006
Law/Business Graduate School Panel
Learn and discuss how you can put a law or business degree to use in the nonprofit sector.
6:30-8:30 PM at the Foundation Center
November/December 2006
Personal Finances Seminar
Learn about how you can most effectively manage your finances on a nonprofit salary in New York City.

Other initiatives and programs we have in the works:
* Launch of Monthly Career Q&A in our monthly e-newsletter
* Speed networking event
* Continuation of the Hangouts at venues all over New York City
We are always looking for volunteers to help our various Board committees, as well as low-to-no-cost space for our events. If you are able to help with
either of these, please contact us.
We would also like to thank all of you for contributing to YNPN-NYC's mission of supporting the professional development of the next generation of
nonprofit leaders by providing opportunities for skill-building, information sharing, and networking. We urge you to send any suggestions or

Our dedicated newsletter staff will be taking August off but the newsletter will be back in September. In the meantime, we hope you are staying cool and

Vanessa Reed
This month's YNPN Spotlighter puts things in perspective from a lively and candid point of view.
Congrats Vanessa on being July’s Spotlight of the Month! I am sure you have a lot of insight to share. For those who have not had the pleasuring of meeting you, may you explain your background, organization, and your current role?
My background is actually in business with a concentration in Computer Programming; so many of my former jobs were in banking and accounting. Since coming to work for United Way of New York City (UWNYC) back in 2000, I’ve learned the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.

Can you share with our readers on some of the challenges and opportunities we face in leadership today and future wise?
UWNYC commissioned a study in 2003 that confirmed that the nonprofit sector is looming towards a leadership deficit. Many baby boomers have started to retire and 50% plan on retiring in the next five years.

The Foundation Center has released its Foundation Yearbook: Facts and Figures on
Private and Community Foundations, which documents changes in all active US foundations from
1975 thru 2004. Key findings include an increase in overall foundation giving and an increase in foundation assets.

According to Independent Sector, the value of volunteer time has steadily increased through the years bringing it to $18.04 per hour for 2005.
