Join Us in Congratulating Jessica Walker, 2006 Nonprofiteer of the Year

As a young leader in the nonprofit sector, Jessica has not only excelled in her position as Senior Policy Analyst at the United Neighborhood House of New York (UNH), but has also proven to be a strong advocate for the elderly in New York City. She served as the principal author of a groundbreaking report entitled, Aging in the Shadows, which explores the growing problem of social isolation among seniors. This report highlights the vulnerability of New York seniors aging alone, presents existing programs working to combat this problem, and offers recommendations for change. Most notably, the Commissioner of the City's Department for the Aging made the report mandatory reading for his senior staff. At UNH, Jessica oversees the UNH/Starr Foundation Initiative: Strengthening Neighborhood Based Services for the Elderly, a $500,000 initiative piloting eight geriatric mental health programs throughout the City.

Like many rising young leaders in the nonprofit sector, her role in the community extends beyond her full time position. She is involved in a number of community organizations and also volunteers her time as a host at Rise Up Radio on WBAI 99.5 FM, a weekly radio show that highlights youth issues and advocacy. Congrats to Jessica!

>YNPN National News

YNPN National Conference
The first National Conference for YNPN took place in the San Francisco Bay Area in mid March. The one day gathering bought together thirty-five nonprofit leaders from New York City, Washington DC, Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, Austin, Denver and the Bay Area. The conference gave the various chapters an opportunity to learn from one another the strategies, successes, and pitfalls of growing a support organization at the local level that created community impact and gave voice to young nonprofit professionals.

Welcome New National Board Members!
We welcome Sean Daniels and Liza Davies to YNPN National Board. Sean is the Associate Artistic Director and Resident Director of the California Shakespeare Theater. In addition, he also serves as an Associate Artist of Geva Theater Center in Rochester, NY. Liza works at Casa Central, a Hispanic social services agency that serves the Chicago area. Liza is an active member of the Executive Board of YNPN Chicago as well as her alumni association board.

YNPN Facilitates a Young Museum Professionals Roundtable
Julia Bissell, YNPN-NYC National Liaison, and Brad Scriber, YNPN-DC Chair, facilitated a lively discussion at the Young Museum Professionals Roundtable at the Small Museum Association Conference in Ocean City, Maryland. At one of the first inter-chapter event/appearances, Julia and Brad's discussion brought to light that young museum professionals face many of the same issues that are seen in the larger nonprofit world with the main issue being the leadership transition the community will face over the next 20 years.
