The YNPN-NYC Nonprofiteer of the Year award recognizes a young nonprofit professional who has made outstanding contributions to both their organization and the local nonprofit sector in general. Applicants must demonstrate leadership towards achieving results as well as dedication to the field in which they work.

Last year's Nonprofiteer of the Year, Maija Neville, MPH, is the former Director of Health Education at Settlement Health and Medical Services, a nonprofit community health center dedicated to providing services to the underserved in East Harlem. As a young leader in the nonprofit sector, Maija excelled in her position at Settlement Health and continues to serve as a strong advocate for the Harlem community and New York City at large. Additionally, Maija also volunteers her time to lecture at various New York City universities on the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its impact on communities of color. Currently Maija works as a Grants Manager at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's, Office of Program Development in the Division of Mental Hygiene.

I’m halfway through my first year at Columbia Business School, where I’m enrolled in their full-time MBA program within their Social Enterprise Program. I’m also working as a development consultant at New Visions for Public Schools, usually from 10 to 15 hours a week, and am working on smaller projects at other nonprofits.

You recently left a full time position to go back to school. What made you decide to make this change?
I really look to my former bosses and mentors for advice on what skills they use on a day to day basis as nonprofit leaders. At Big Brothers Big Sisters, I had the opportunity to work closely with senior management, several of whom had MBAs and/or extensive backgrounds in the for-profit sector, and I saw how much they drew upon their finance and marketing skills. read more
